I grew up in the heartland of America; smack dab in the middle of the United States, Kansas City to be exact. Lenexa, KS to be even more exact. It was the 80’s, what a time to be alive! The internet hadn’t been invented yet, people still talked to people in real life, the Atari 2600 was still the coolest video game system known to man, only the rich had car phones, and we all still believed that processed food and diet soda was good for us! Man the 80’s were awesome! Fast-forward to 2006. Needless to say a lot had changed since then. I graduated from college with a degree in commercial arts. I moved to Nashville to pursue my dream of being a photographer. For 7 years I shot too many bands to count! I was able to photograph some really great people, from Amy Grant to Hayley Williams and everyone in-between! I loved it. I loved Nashville. I still do. Fast-forward to 2011.
While Nashville is still very much home in my heart; I really wanted to pursue other avenues of photography besides focusing strictly on music. So what better place to do that than, in my humble opinion one of the greatest states this country has to offer, California. Lets be honest, we have it all, right? We have some of the most awe-inspiring mountains. I’m looking at you Yosemite! Our coasts lines and oceans are a daily inspiration, Big Sur I salute you! The deserts are serene with their rugged beauty; they command their own kind of respect. Joshua Tree you are the very picture of quiet, still perfection! I love it! I love to be out in it and I love to photograph it! There’s quite simply no better place for environmental portraits. Fast-forward to now - 2015.
I’ve been in LA a few years now and since have been focusing on lifestyle and environmental portraits; a sharp contrast from photographing bands and artists. It really is a completely different world and I’ve fallen in love with it. By way of story telling it’s more like directing a movie than photographing and I love that about lifestyle. I like the spontaneity of it. My philosophical approach to shooting lifestyle isn’t complicated, but that doesn’t mean it's easy. Establishing that connection quickly with your subject is vital, getting them to pull out their real self, not their “model” self, is key. It requires a certain amount of vulnerability and honesty and it’s my job to get them there. It’s a challenge but I love it and it’s almost always a good time! Some of the best times I’ve had are on shoots laughing my guts out with the talent and crew! So come on, let’s get together, have a few laughs and connect like we used to in the 80’s, devices free!
